Credit Repair San Antonio- Personal Budget Busters and How to Trim Down

Are your habits or daily rituals costing you money? Do you even know if you have costly rituals or habits? Maybe it is a monthly ritual or annual ritual? Whatever it is, are you willing to try something different in order to free up some money in your family’s budget?

We all know how to lose weight by lowering the calories we eat and exercising more just as much as we know how to save money by not spending more money than we bring in. But what are those little things that we don’t take into consideration when creating a budget. I have to admit that I still pick up magazines that claim to have THE best ideas on how to create a budget that will get me out of MY DEBT. Somehow many of the authors of these articles think that I have a very money thirsty habit of drinking very expensive coffee drinks on a daily basis. This couldn’t be further from the truth (no, I am not resisting the opportunity to confess a designer coffee addiction) and further from the type of tips I could use in addressing the habits and rituals that really do cost me money on a regular basis.

Before you begin to review your budget draining habits, I would suggest you start by asking yourself if you are using your cash/checking/debit card for items that you need and reserving your credit cards for items that you can agree to pay within the next 30 days or on a reasonable payment agreement. This means that you should NOT be using your credit cards to make purchases such as groceries and gas. If you are not able to afford to pay for groceries (eating/drinking out) and gas, then you may need to review your budget a bit more aggressively.

Here are a few guilty pleasures that may be draining your budget faster than you know:

I started by testing the strength of my cable addiction by filling my schedule with other activities and also seeing if I could find the shows and news that I was missing online for free! I went ahead and cancelled the cable altogether. You can also shop around or call to negotiate for the current promotion price with your cable provider if you are not willing to live without your cable.

Eating Out
What is more weird: eating at a restaurant because you are in a restaurant even though you are not hungry and it doesn’t fit in your budget or eating a meal you prepared for yourself with your groceries at your office before or after your meeting at a restaurant? Consider a variety of spaces when scheduling a meeting and be open to a budget friendly space like an actual office for professional meetings. Save yourself some calories and money by eating before or after meeting with colleagues or friends.

Drink specials aren’t always the least expensive drink to order when out with friends and colleagues. They can tempt you into drinking something other than what you would have ordered in the first place and probably more expensive. You can always order my favorite ‘fake out’ drink, a club soda with salt and lime and save yourself some money and a few headaches.

Are you addicted to shopping? How to manage your credit card usage and keep a high credit score.

The financial aftermath of holiday sales can leave you feeling worse than how you felt going into the holiday weekend or even into the department store. It is an odd occurrence when you get the strong urge to go shopping during the same moments you realize that you are in major DEBT. It is possible that consumers are so consumed with their consumptions that when it comes to dealing with their debt, they can’t think of any way out of it except to spend more money.

If you think in terms of a person who has an addiction to alcohol or eating. The addict will begin with using drinking or eating as a way to cope or participate in an area of their life. Then, it starts to be used in more areas of life in more ways and transforms into addiction or problem. In a sense, the addict will attempt to use their addiction as the cure for their addiction. Outside looking in, it doesn’t make much sense, but inside looking out, there doesn’t seem to be any other way.

Ok, so maybe you are not a fullblown addict. Maybe you dabble in the occasional seasonal shopping binge or spend money in moderation. From the frugal to the fullblown shopaholic, money tends to be something that is used to acquire a need or want. Here are a few tips to keep you from going from frugal to fullblown shopaholic:

Manage the number of your credit cards/accounts

2-3 revolving credit accounts is plenty for you to maintain a positive credit life. Keep in mind that in order to have your credit accounts working positively for your credit score, you should keep your balance to limit ratio at 19% or less and make your monthly payments on time every month.

Take inventory of your credit cards/accounts

Maintain credit cards/accounts that fit your lifestyle. Keep in mind that if you don’t use your credit cards/accounts, some creditors will lower your limit and/or close your account altogether. Try to consider opening credit cards/accounts that you may be able to use in the long term and in various ways.

Become familiar with the terms of your existing and future credit cards/accounts

By knowing the terms of your credit lines, you will be more likely to take into consideration how you use and pay on your credit lines. This may save you unnecessary purchases and help you to avoid paying interest charges and/or fees associated with the credit line.

Remember your Grandma!

Older generations remember a time when credit was really only used on an asneeded basis. They would not have dreamed of using credit for things that they knew they couldn’t afford this month or next. They also didn’t use credit for things that they absolutely didn’t need. Think of how different your life would literally look like if you would follow this tip!

The last thing you want to do is for your spending to get so out of control that you really feel stuck in a financial breakdown. Click on the link to hear one woman’s story of hitting financial rock bottom:

Too much month at the end of the money?

Do you find yourself in the same financial corner of ‘Barely Getting By’ & ‘Broke’ month after month, year after year? Or maybe you are new to this side of the financial street and really don’t know how you got here or how to get back to ‘Saving for Rainy Day’ & ‘Debt Free’. Either way, when you are here it can be scary. You may not be able to see the road back to financial recovery and then, you may just settle for where you are and get used to being where you are because you can’t see any other way out.

It may not make sense to you right now, but you may actually discover pieces of financial freedom in your home right now! You can dedicate a weekend to going through the areas of your home or you can take on one area a week until this gets done.

Here’s how to make the discovery:

● Start an old fashioned ‘piggy bank’ Be diligent about putting any and all money that you find in your ‘piggy bank’. Even the dirty pennies that you will find on the floor or in your drawers or at the bottom of your purse; you can wash them and put them in the ‘piggy bank’. My grandma once told my mom when she saw a penny on the floor, ‘Man, you must be rich to be throwing money on the floor’. Think about the money you walk over or ‘leave on the table’ not just figuratively, but literally, too!

● Take inventory of what you own You may discover that you have multiple number of the same things! Multiple: extension cords, lotions, hand soaps, toothpaste, hammers (or other tools), exact clothes/shoes, crock pots, cutting boards, copy
paper, tissue paper, etc. Organize the multiples that you have in the appropriate spaces. Be diligent about always putting these items in these spaces so that you are aware of how much you already have. If you only need one of the multiples (i.e. hammer), then sell, swap or donate the rest. The next time you think about buying something you could just go shopping in your own home for what you have already bought.

● Return any items that you DO NOT NEED This may sound obvious, but for some reason people who say they are ‘broke’ or they are barely making it somehow have recently purchased items such as shoes that come from those monthly subscription deals or clothes that they picked up at a major sale from a store. RETURN THE ITEMS if they are still within the return time.

● Sell items that you DO NOT NEED Here are some of the obvious and not so obvious ways of selling the items that you DO NOT NEED: Have a garage sale, post on Craigslist, take to a local resale shop (Plato’s Closet, Buffalo Exchange, Half Price Books, etc).

● Swap AKA Barter! You have so many things that you want or need and you have so many things that other people want or need. GET IT?!?! Craigslist has a trade/barter section, but you can also let your friends and family know what you have or what you can do (services) and what you want or need. You can even host a swap at your home if you really want to go big with getting what you want.

● Donate Share your wealth! Donate the items that you just can’t get rid of by selling or swapping. Especially if you are left with many items after a swap. Don’t forget that you can use your donation as a tax write-off and know that you will be helping someone or people out there while helping yourself clear spaces for what you actually need!

You Never Forget Your First Credit Card

It all seems so long ago, when you were walking through the quad at your college campus and you saw that credit card booth giving away free t-shirts and water bottles with their logo just for applying for their credit card; you didn’t even have to get approved for their credit card to receive their gifts. How did they know that you would be walking there in the Texas heat too poor to buy new clothes (or anything for that matter) and too thirsty to just take a few sips from the water fountain in any building? It’s like it was meant to be! You couldn’t wait to tell your parents about your experience and your new love!

The relationship started out great with the free gifts just for being you, little savings here and there just for buying things that you needed anyway. You didn’t know why everyone was so negative about your credit card relationship. They must not have ever had a credit card like the one that you had because this was exactly what you needed to get through your tough financial times. Your credit card was there for you through good and bad times.
You made payments on time every month. You kept your balances low. You even earned good credit and got introduced to more credit cards that you never would have gotten if it weren’t for that first credit card. You probably would not have been able to buy your own house if it wasn’t for your good credit which you got from your good relationship with your credit cards that you got probably because of that very first credit card!

Then, you got ‘lifed’. You know, life happened. Something got in the way of your credit card relationships and you could not keep up your end of the deal. You started to meet your first credit card’s other sides, like their collection department. Where did that department come from? You thought you really knew your first credit card, but if you would have known how they would have turned out to be, you would have never accepted their free gifts or applied to have them in your wallet. Maybe your friends and family were right, after-all. One good thing that came out of the credit card relationship was you home, but you can’t buy things like new furniture because all those credit card relationships all went away when you got ‘lifed’ including your great credit scores.

Now, you have been introduced to their partners, the third-party debt collectors. They start telling their side of your ‘financial fright’ story to the credit bureaus and then credit bureaus report it totally wrong and even worse in your credit report. Now every lender thinks they know how you use credit because they access your credit report when you apply with them. You start to believe that you deserve this somehow and no one can help you and you can’t help yourself out of this mess. The choice is up to you at this point. You can continue living the life of harassing phone calls, collection letters piling up, credit so bad you can’t refinance the home you now can’t afford or you can take a stand for a better life. Who knows, maybe you will get back into a healthy relationship with a new credit card (s) and reclaim your good credit again. The fact is that you have rights as a consumer and you can get back to a good credit standing and maybe a better credit standing than you have ever had before. It’s all up to you!
